January Theme of the Month, 2019

1/21/2019 (Permalink)

It is finally the 1st of the year! With the busy Holiday Season behind us, we look forward to serving the needs of all our communities we are a part of. Each month, we have a different theme, and January’s theme is us being FIRST!

  • We want to be the FIRST person you use his year for any of your mitigation or rebuild needs.
  • Your FIRST call when a client has any type of loss.
  • The FIRST eyes and ears on site of any claim.

To remind our contacts that we want to be FIRST when dealing with any type of loss or cleaning, we are giving away these bright green SERVPRO ice scrapers this month.

Why an ice scraper? This is an item that you might not always have a need for, but are always grateful to have in that time of need. This is the same concept with SERVPRO, everyone is thankful for us in their time of need.

Ways to Avoid a Burst Pipes & a Water loss

1/11/2019 (Permalink)

The Weather Channel and SERVPRO Corporate have partnered together this winter season to help inform home and business owners of ways they can avoid their pipelines from bursting or freezing. You can visit the SERVPRO Industries Facebook page to watch the report:

https://www.facebook.com/SERVPRO/videos/578010849311157

The tips that are mentioned are listed below.

Preventative measures, before cold weather hits:

  1. Putting your garden hose away for the winter and putting on a faucet cover
  2. Attach insulated pipe sleeves in your crawlspace or exterior
  3. Add insulation to the attic

When the temperature drops below freezing:

  1. Open up the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to help the air circulate around your plumbing
  2. Drip your faucets
  3. Use a fan to move air into colder rooms in the home.

Being informed and taking preventative measures can help you avoid an out of pocket expense, or a claim on your home insurance.

Hurricane Season 2018

11/7/2018 (Permalink)

Storm #TeamElkins is always ready to hit the road when a disaster strikes. SERVPRO is a franchise business, so we are able to rely on other franchises owners and teams to lend a hand when we have too much work to handle by ourselves. This typically happens when a major natural disaster hits, or a city-wide event happens. For instance, in 2018, SERVPRO of Butler, Hopkins, Ohio, Muhlenberg and Edmonson Counties has participated in two hurricanes: Florence and Michael. Both of these hurricanes caused major damage to several states in America and in other countries. We had employees working to clean up from these storms for over a month straight, and there was still a lot of damage left to clean up once they returned home. It will be years before the citizens lives are back to normal.

16 Fall Home Maintenance Must-Dos

11/6/2018 (Permalink)

With winter creeping up on us, it is time to do some home maintenance to ensure no winter storms damage your home or you have any disasters during this cold time. Here are some things you may forget about either doing or checking for damage:

  1. Clean behind the fridge and check the fridge tubing
  2. Check and weatherize all the windows and doors
  3. Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
  4. Inspect the perimeter of your house for cracks or holes
  5. Inspect your roof
  6. Check your dryer’s exhaust tube and vent for lint or debris buildup
  7. Cover your air conditioning unit
  8. Repair and seal driveway
  9. Drain hoses and shut off outdoor water valves
  10. Clean and apply sealer to deck
  11. Cover and store outdoor furniture and grills
  12. Inspect your furnace
  13. Empty dirt from flowerpots and garden containers
  14. Clean and store summer garden tools
  15. Plant flowering spring bulbs
  16. Clean the gutters

Doing these tasks will lessen the risk of major disaster this winter!

Hurricane Michael Aid

10/29/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Hurricane Michael Aid This was the side of a church

Within two weeks of each other, two powerful hurricanes hit the American coast causing major destruction. Our SERVPRO franchise has a Storm division, where we travel to help clean up from major disasters. Our team was boots on the ground in North Carolina the day after Hurricane Florence hit. We were still there, three weeks later, when Hurricane Michael made landfall. Seeing the need, we moved one of our crews to Mexico Beach, Florida to start the clean up there. Our crew members described the area as looking like it was hit by a bomb. There was no food or cell service, most buildings were flattened, and the traffic was terrible because most of the roads were still flooded or blocked off. Even though we now have all our crew members home, it will still be years before the areas most impacted will be back to normal.

Explanation of "Storm"

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

We mention working on Storm a lot on our social media outlets. But this brings up the question, “what is Storm?”. Our franchise can travel all over the country when there has been a major disaster, and the local SERVPRO franchise cannot handle the workload by themselves. It happens a lot with natural disasters like flooding and hurricanes but can also happen when there is below freezing temperatures, large city sewage system backups, and more.

Only certain franchises around the country are allowed to travel and help others. You have to pass a series of goals set by corporate and have enough full-time employees to be able to send some while keeping up with the work at home. We are lucky enough to be on the list of offices that are called.

When we are working on Storm, many of our employees are barley home for weeks at a time. This can be tough when families are involved, and we appreciate all our employee’s willingness to spend time away from home to help others. The work is hard and the hours long, but seeing the difference your team can make to these family’s homes or businesses is all worth it.

It is hard to prepare for when disaster strikes, but we strive to be as prepared as possible for the moment we are called, whether it be someone’s home, business or on Storm. We are always ready to help fellow SERVPRO franchises and help anyone in need.

We always have a plan in place to be able to assist our clients in need!

How to Protect Pipes in the Winter

12/1/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage How to Protect Pipes in the Winter Water Freezes at 32 Degrees Fahrenheit

With snow in the forecast, here are 5 tips from the Red Cross on making sure your pipes do not freeze or burst during cold weather:

1. Insulate both hot and cold water pipes.
2. Keep the garage door closed if any water supply lines are in the garage.
3. Keep a trickle of water going through the lines.
4. Leave your thermostat at the same temperature both night and day.
5. Open cabinet doors to help warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.

A burst pipe can cause thousands of dollars in damage because it has the potential to flood your home. If the five tips mentioned above do not protect your pipes, give SERVPRO of Butler, Hopkins, Ohio, Muhlenberg, and Edmonson Counties a call at 270-875-4883!

Outdoor Storm Safety

10/4/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Outdoor Storm Safety Storm Safety Guidelines

Being outside during a treacherous storm can be extremely dangerous if you do not take the right precautions. The type of environment you are in during the time of the storm influences what precautions you must take.

If you are in an open area, it is important to find low ground. Finding lower ground has potential to protect you in a thunderstorm because lightning usually strikes on higher ground.

If you are on any body of water, you must seek land immediately. Being on open water during a storm is one of the most dangerous places you could be because lightning strikes water at a higher rate.

If you are in a forested area, it is important to seek shelter under a growth of small trees in the lowest area you can find.

If you happen to be stuck in your car during a storm, you must keep your windows closed. You also should stay in the car to provide shelter.

Storm Team Elkins Activated!

7/19/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Storm Team Elkins Activated! Our Storm Team hard at work!

This week, Northern Illinois experienced spontaneous heavy rain that caused major flooding problems within people’s homes and basements.  A basement is the easiest place for flooding to occur because it is the lowest level of the home or building.  Most basements are built below the ground where a lot of rain will run into.  There are several reasons why your basement could end up flooding: these include…

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more.

Our Storm Team was prepared and ready to assist in the clean up effort with specialized equipment to ensure that homes were all dry and clear of any other damage or other future problems.  If water damage is not handled correctly and efficiently, it can cause severe damage to your home’s structure in addition to potentially hazardous health issues from mold.  Our entire team worked together to get the trucks loaded and on the road in a moment’s notice so our Storm Team could hit the area ready because the longer you wait, the worse the damage may be.

The bottom line: a flooded basement can jeopardize your health, safety, and your home’s integrity. It’s worth making a call to SERVPRO of Butler, Hopkins, Ohio, Muhlenberg, and Edmonson Counties of Kentucky and let our trained, professional crews handle the situation safely and correctly.
